JS.ORG CLEANUP #6815

Closed js-org-cleanup closed 2 years ago

JS.ORG CLEANUP

The following js.org subdomains have been detected to no longer be working.

If you are the 'owner' of any of these subdomains and wish to still use them, please leave a comment below in the following format:

I am responsible for `xxx.js.org`.
It now has [reasonable content](https://github.com/js-org/js.org/wiki/No-Content) and is now working.

Subdomains that aren't accounted for after a month and are still down will be removed.

Note to maintainers:

Domains with the checkbox ticked are now working and will not be removed at the end of the cleanup period.

Contact Failed

All domains in this list have not been contacted by the maintainers of js.org because no contact was found or the user is ghost

Contact Made by mentioning in this PR

All domains in this list have had contact made by the js.org maintainers or the cleanup robot.

Contact Made

All domains in this list have had contact made (issue raised on relevant repository etc.) by the js.org maintainers or the cleanup robot.

'Owners' of subdomains that are identifiable through the GitHub pages site that the subdomain points to will be contacted via their repository where possible (repository public & issues enabled) They will receive the following message asking them to reply to this issue to keep their domain:

# JS.ORG CLEANUP

Hello, it seems a `js.org` subdomain that was requested to target this repository no longer works.
The subdomain requested was `xxx.js.org` and had the target of `xxx`.
It produced the following failures when tested as part of the cleanup:
 - [HTTP](http://xxx.js.org): `xxx`
 - [HTTPS](https://xxx.js.org): `xxx`

To keep the `js.org` subdomain you should add a page with [reasonable content](https://github.com/js-org/js.org/wiki/No-Content) within a month so the subdomain passes the validation.
Failure to rectify the issues will result in the requested subdomain being removed from JS.ORGs DNS and the list of active subdomains.

**If you are wanting to keep the `js.org` subdomain and have added [reasonable content](https://github.com/js-org/js.org/wiki/No-Content), YOU MUST reply to the [main cleanup issue](https://github.com/js-org/js.org/issues/6815) with the response format detailed at the top to keep the requested subdomain.**

Hello, this is Michael from Best of JS. First thank you for maintaining this awesome project!

Like mentioned in this issue https://github.com/js-org/js.org/issues/2040 I requested in 2018 a redirect from bestof.js.org to bestofjs.org when we moved to our own domain.

Is it possible to keep the redirection? If not, should I setup a kind of landing page that explains the site is live at https://bestofjs.org?

Thank you in advance for your answer!

MattIPv4 commented 2 years ago

@indus what do you think here? I know now we ask folks to have a landing page (like vue.js.org etc.), but given this is legacy are we okay to leave the raw redirect, or would it be best to have a landing page for consistency in the rule?

SpreeHertz commented 2 years ago

I am responsible for sandmine.js.org. It now has reasonable content and is now working.

MattIPv4 commented 2 years ago

@SpreeHertz It is still returning a 404?

SpreeHertz commented 2 years ago

On sandmine.js.org, it's still returning a 404. image

MattIPv4 commented 2 years ago

Yup, so you need to fix that or the subdomain will be removed at the end of the cleanup period 👍

SpreeHertz commented 2 years ago

but on https://spreehertz.github.io/Sandmine.js/ it doesn't return a 404

MattIPv4 commented 2 years ago

That sounds like you've not set the custom domain in GitHub Pages settings then

arnav-kr commented 2 years ago

@MattIPv4 my https://arnav-kr.github.io/ is not on https://json.js.org/

its on https://json-formatter.js.org/

i think it was not changed in active cname records

i asked for json.js.org first then @indus said its reserved and then i choosed json-formatter.js.org.

see pr #6339

@michaelrambeau would be nice if you could implement a landingpage to become this in line with our general policy for such big pages.

@arnav-kr yes- it looks like I made a mistake there. @MattIPv4 Should I just manually update the record or would this bring problems for the cleanup script?

@indus Manual update should be fine 👍 Ty :)

indus commented 2 years ago

@arnav-kr I just made the change manually (https://github.com/js-org/js.org/commit/82db2fdb959e432432863212cbacb6f2ca5ac54b). Should be fine now.

@iam-medvedev sorry for the spam. I used the github API to search for requesters but this brought up similar subdomains as well. Sorry. Forget about it.

ndom91 commented 2 years ago

I am responsible for next-auth.js.org.

Our inclusion in the list here is due to the automatic redirect of www. -> next-auth.js.org.

This is a vercel hosted project, do you have any other suggestions on how better do handle the www redirect? Otherwise I would like it to stay in here as is. We are still using it. Thanks!

gdcmarinho commented 2 years ago

I am responsible for mailgo.js.org. Now the project has its own domain mailgo.dev, you can delete mailgo.js.org, thank you for your work!

indus commented 2 years ago

@ndom91 regarding https://next-auth.js.org/ it looks like it is now working without the redirect. Have changed anything?

MattIPv4 commented 2 years ago

@indus next-auth.js.org is fine, but www.next-auth.js.org was flagged for having an automatic redirect -- given it's redirecting to another js.org subdomain (next-auth.js.org) are we okay for it to just remain as-is?

zkochan commented 2 years ago

I am responsible for pnpm.js.org.

We have used this domain for years but purchased pnpm.io, so we redirect it to pnpm.io. Many pages still reference pnpm.js.org (even the Node.js docs), so if possible I would appreciate if the redirect would work for at least a few months more.

MattIPv4 commented 2 years ago

I am responsible for wiki.js.org. It now has reasonable content and is now working.

@NGPixel This subdomain still appears to have an automatic redirect, which is not permitted for js.org. If you need it to redirect to another domain elsewhere, we ask that you have a landing page that requires user interaction to redirect (e.g. vue.js.org, node.js.org)

indus commented 2 years ago

@MattIPv4 Ah I see - I don't see a problem with that. Thats what any visitor of the page would expect.

MattIPv4 commented 2 years ago

@zkochan similar to above, if you can have a landing page that requires user interaction to redirect, that'd be great (see vue.js.org, node.js.org, etc.)

I am responsible for bingsu.js.org. It now has reasonable content and is now working.

GitLab Pages domain verification However, [due to GitLab’s latest Custom Domain policy](https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/support/workflows/verify_pages_domain.html), I need the following TXT record to be added to the DNS server in order to keep the domain mapping working: ``` _gitlab-pages-verification-code.bingsu.js.org TXT gitlab-pages-verification-code=3cee97ff960a028f9ceff80692b4c87f ``` [Otherwise, the domain mapping will be deleted after 7 days.](https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/support/workflows/verify_pages_domain.html#:~:text=Verification%20re%2Doccurs%20periodically%3B%20if%20it%20fails%2C%20the%20domain%20becomes%20unverified%20but%20remains%20enabled%20for%20a%20grace%20period%20of%20seven%20days.%20Once%20that%20grace%20period%20has%20elapsed%2C%20the%20domain%20becomes%20expired%2C%20and%20is%20then%20disabled.) That was why the URL is broken in the first place. I apologize for the hassle. Edit: Thank you! @indus I understand, and will make one shortly.

FinnCowbell commented 2 years ago

I am responsible for secrethitler.js.org. It has reasonable content and is working! However, it runs on a heroku free dyno which means the page takes ~10 seconds to load out of server sleep.

indus commented 2 years ago

@FinnCowbell Of course, this is no reason to complain. But it may lead to the same thing happening next year 😨
