The tree structure of conversations (reply to ...) should be explorable. Collapsing/expanding branches and reading through the branches should be more like it is on reddit (without up-/down-voting ... chronological sorting is fine).
Without such a tree-view it is really difficult to focus your attention to follow the chains of sub-discussions.
This is even more apparent in conversations with many participants.
