Make README render as formatted MarkDown in GitLab #11

Currently, the README is shown as plaintext, not as formatted MarkDown in GitLab.

This branch fixes that by adding the .md suffix.

Note: this PR has conflicts with #10. I will rebase if that would get accepted first.
