revamp tests on more-models #57

The goal here is just to get tests passing and to get comfortable with the validity of the code, not to write a good test suite at this time. That's a separate issue on a later milestone.

Tests are passing. Closing this, though @SimonCMills is still reviewing the validity of the new code.
