Great choice of color! Seriously, I think you should pursue your idea of doing an animated gif of a choropleth to show the rise and fall of minimal techno over time.
I'd suggest to compare minimal techno with other techno styles to see if there is a trend in the genre. Also, I am really interested in knowing why after 2007 minimal techno number of records went down. Maybe a data join with other data sources that provide number of plays of minimal techno songs, songs revenue, etc. to explain the phenomena?
Made a working prototype of a gif, which I'll clean up tomorrow:
I'm still shipping the idea of showing the rise and fall of minimal techno with an animated gif. I can't really see the country lines, though. So it's hard to tell where minimal techno was popular or rather developed over time. Go for some color!
Some ideas:
Changing the color palette, inspiration from our mascot above.
Here below are three illustrations, the fixed map will follow.
Howdy! I'm a little robot, let's take a peek.
Please post your first revision! It should be posted by Thursday at midnight. More details available here.
If this is your update, make sure you followed the update template so my robot eyes can see it. Click the pencil in the top right-hand corner to edit/update that comment.
so...can you dig into the data here, maybe show me a series of charts by each year with releases by country? is germany always number 1? are there years when other places challenged that position? or can you chart all the countries in 2007 at the peak? are there artists that show up over time that could have interesting trends?
or can you put this in context of other types of techno or other types of music? that was your original pitch. i'd like to see that, it would help me understand why this is of interest.
important tho, is you give us some sort of definition. what is 'minimal' techno?
Excellent color choices my friend! Big fan of this project did you end up putting this in HTML and writing a story? I would be curious to have some text putting these graphs in context
Since I've fallen a bit behind, I've not made any major changes to the project (apart from adding a minimal description of what minimal techno is).
Moving QGIS files around makes for a very angry program, which took the liberty of hiding my hard work on figuring out its time manager plugin. Will update as I figure out where it's gone.
lol Love the meme.
For the map, I'd either change the color of the base map or change the color of the dots. Currently, the colors (especially the light pink and purple) doesn't really pop. Also, are you representing the change in numbers with both the change of color & size? If so, maybe stick with one color and change the sizes only?
Pitch
Summary
I got minimal techno album releases from discogs. I want to tell the story of the rise and fall of this niche subgenre, both temporally and geographically.
Some of the inspiration comes from the metal band per capita map.
Ideally, we'll end up with an animated gif of the rise and fall of minimal techno, maybe through qgis?
Details
Possible headline(s): Minimal Techno is Over AND the rise and fall of minimal techno
Data set(s): https://github.com/maxarvid/data-studio/tree/master/code/01_minimal_techno
Code repository: https://github.com/maxarvid/data-studio/tree/master/code/01_minimal_techno
Possible problems/fears/questions: Discogs list might not be complete. I'd like to have it animate to show change over time on a map.
Work so far
I messed around, here are two graphs (over time, and top countries):
