that infographic you include - it's got some dataviz crimes. for instance, the violence against people data are just people icons with numbers. i see nothing. that could have been executed by having multiple small people to represent the data. ditto the timeline. ditto the tankers. where is the visualization?
i'd urge caution making it light of it, as the infographic you included did. these pirates are killing people, that's serious. can you give us some real information and visualize it, like how much they are costing companies or if pirates in certain areas are more likely to kill you than detain you?
Sounds like an interesting idea and you have some good data, but I really dislike that infographic. It's so busy and filled with information I can't get anything out of it.
Very interesting project! Not much to comment on, as of now, but I will say this: A headline like "Piracy back on the Rise - These are the areas you should avoid on your Sailing turn" wouldn't get me interested in the article, because I'm not the one addressed by it. I think most of your readers wouldn't be. So I'd zoom in on an interesting finding (once you've had the time, to have a look at the data. Happy to comment after your initial findings.)

Pitch
High Sea Piracy isn't a thing of the past. It is one of the biggest concerns for ship owners and insurance companies and - after the international community send fleets to find and track down the pirates - on the rise again. Especially around the African continent and in some countries in South East Asia.
Summary
I'm looking at the regions where piracy is flourishing and try to figure out which boats are often targeted by looking at the incidents of the last couple of years. I'm also interested to find out if there are any shifts between the countries (possibly because of Chinese fleets based in Djibouti now and countries like Somalia and Nigeria fighting with internal problems).
Details
The ICC International Maritime Bureau has a lot of data concerning the cases of piracy

Work so far
No visuals so far. I was just playing around with the data that came mostly from here: ICC International Maritime Bureau
and from here: https://knoema.com/PARS2017/piracy-and-armed-robbery-against-ships?regionId=NG.
I have something like this in mind:
