Please complete all of the following sections, or the ghost of Joseph Pulitzer will spookily dance around your issue! A completed version of this template can be found at https://github.com/jsoma/data-studio-projects/issues/1

Pitch

Summary

Using a dataset measuring the air quality at different points within Zürich, I'd like to take a stab at scripting Illustrator and develop a chart using scripting. So don't expect any deeper data analysis in this case.

Details

Possible headline(s): Something something air

Data set(s): https://data.stadt-zuerich.ch/dataset/luftqualitaet-historisierte-messungen

Code repository: https://github.com/xeophin/lede-data-studio

Possible problems/fears/questions: I haven't scripted Illustrator so far, so it's gonna be an A D V E N T U R E! 💪

preview

This is a first preview, with a subset of the data. The goal would be to make it more illustrative, with additional symbols placed where appropriate, and with additional data being shown.

Any changes in direction or topic?

Not so far, no.

Problems/Questions

After testing long enough, Illustrator produced a Kernel Panic and crashed my Mac. 😢 (No data lost as far as I can tell, though)

i can't read the scale on the chart... what i'd suggest it you vary the color on the scale so we can see the differences more. use a blue on carbon monoxide and the pink on the particulates which will net you purple

or blue and yellow, which will get you a green. as it is with the two reds you ends up not having much distinction on the color on the bars. you may also want to cluster the weeks into winter/spring/summer/fall so we can see if there are seasonal trends.

The visualization is looking nice so far. I agree with Sarah about choosing some less ambiguous colors for the scale. Also, maybe switch its orientation. Echoing Soma, having to turn my head to read labels on the x-axis drives me nuts

Any changes in direction or topic?

Not really, just continuing to work on implementing all the features I want.

Problems/Questions

It's difficult to debug, and Illustrator has weird limitations, like not being able to create a path from scratch that has more than a thousand points …
