[Project] NYC Water Quality #293

Pitch

NYC has famously good tap water, but no city is perfect.

Summary

Looking at water complaints: what type of complaints, where they occur most frequently, where the bugs (!) are.

Details

Started by looking at water consumption in the city, which is at an all-time low (!!!) in spite of population growth. Per capita usage has plunged over the past decade. But there really wasn't enough to work with so I hopped over to water quality complaints.

Possible headline(s): I had some dreams, they were clouds in my tap water, clouds in my tap water

Data set(s): https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Environment/Water-Quality-complaints/qfe3-6dkn

Code repository: https://github.com/jessimckenzi/data-studio/tree/master/06-water

Possible problems/fears/questions: Um, this will require mapping, which I'm still shaky on..I want to try out a heat map with zip codes, but also a separate one that highlights the addresses with extremely high numbers of complaints (17 at one building)

Work so far

These are the charts showing the drop in consumption, but they aren't enough.

And some preliminary analysis of the kind of complaints and their location: screen shot 2018-08-14 at 10 58 58 pm screen shot 2018-08-14 at 10 58 48 pm screen shot 2018-08-14 at 10 58 41 pm

Checklist

This checklist must be completed before you submit your draft.

this seems to be a case of when you want to cluster the data together under categories. looks like people are complaining about tastes or something in the water. if you take this data apart that way it will be easier for us to absorb the data.
