Some of the criticism online activism receives is that it is short-lived or that people cannot sustain the 'outrage' they express via hashtags, etc.

I am curious how long the 'outrage cycle' is? Has it going shorter or longer in the past years. Is it actually cyclical?

Data

I want to collect historical data on hashtags that trend in the wake of racially charged events and track their volume over time.

Historical data is apparently not readily accessible. Anyone know anything about gnip?
