Informal Employment and the Economy

I want to look at the growth of informal employment in relationship to how well the economy is doing over time. I am curious about the trends -- whether the informal economy grows or shrinks when the economy is doing poorly.

I will use growth of GDP to show how the economy is doing. There are a few data sets on informal employment -- I need to spend more time with them in order to understand EXACTLY what kind of information can be pulled out of them.
