some stuff to ignore and exclude (some of it for using virtualenv)
some whitespace issues (like trailing space or newlines at end of file)
an all target that cleans up and then builds the 2 meaningful targets html and latexpdf (this can be improved on by people with more make skills then myself)

Okay, removed the virtualenv changes. With using virtualenvwrapper they are really not necessary anymore.
