Static IP client name not shown in client list #163

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Setup static ip, mac address and host name in router for client e.g.
192.168.1.100
2. Manually set the client to use the static ip, 192.168.1.100
3. Client is shown in router client list with correct mac address but host name
is shown as ???

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Client host name as set in the routers dhcp server settings should be shown in
the client list.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Firmware 1.0.1.8d-p3

Please provide any additional information below.
The client, in this case a switch cannot be assigned an ip it must be set
manually, but it would be nice to identify it with the client name.

I have just bought my RT-N56U and it came with Firmware Version 1.0.1.7f. The
client list displayed the client names for all the clients. I upgraded to
1.0.1.8f and now the client names only appear for Windows 7 clients, the HP
Photosmart printer and my GoFlex Network Storage. It doesn't show the iPod
names, smartphones not Sony Bravia Internet TV although it does list their Mac
addresses and IP's

My issue is the same, I bought the router with Version 1.0.1.7f and when I
upgraded to 1.0.1.8f, client names do not appear any more. However, Clients
which are Wired connected show up.

Seems the RT-AC68U has the same Client Name problem as some other ASUS Routers.
MAC numbers are listed for some devices and "Device Names" are listed for some
other devices. I don't know how to define "Device Names" or where ASUS gets
that info from. But, why get it for some devices and not for others? Why not
allow Users to create a translation table containing MAC Numbers and "Device
Names", then allow Users to select which of those to display in the Client
Status List?  Computers and their associated software should make life easier;
not more complicated than it needs to be. Take a look at CradlePoint
Routers/Software for a good example of User Friendly.
