Maybe I didn't noticed it(or maybe I was just too stupid to notice it :p), but when I tried to send a tweet, which was longer then 140 characters I didn't received any error message. I changed this in a very quick and dirty way but I thought you maybe want to merge my little change...

earthquake actually does this, but you'll see a notification only if you have growl (or libnotify) installed.

That said - I like this approach because I'm using earthquake on remote hosts etc where there's no GUI.

How about the following approach?

keep the commands simple
check the length of status on twitter.update_with_length_check() or so
show how long the status was
- as a guide for editing

For no growl environment, earthquake attempt to show notification on the terminal.
