Unable to create new chat in Elgg 1.9 #1

I start writing a name into the add/remove friends field. Then member names, starting with the letters I've already typed, pop up and I click on them. Then they are listed below and I can delete them by pressing some circle on the right. When I try to start a new chat the system always complains: "No members selected!"
