There were no tests previously. I'll take a stab at them in a bit since coverage here would be good.

This seems fine to me, though I'd somewhat prefer to see it use the @ref syntax for branches in the URL that pip uses: https://pip.readthedocs.io/en/1.1/requirements.html#version-control
