"Something went wrong" on enabling extension #5

Fresh install of phpBB 3.3. I uploaded the extension and clicked "Enable" for the SMF 2 Authentication Provider. Got a message: "AJAX error Something went wrong when processing your request."

I had been using PHP 7.3, tried going back to 7.1, no change. I am now stuck.

Never mind - was a server issue due to misconfigured SSL.
