Are we going to have something in Jan 2023?
Hi, I have been a little busy this month and didn't manage to organize it :(
I dont know if we can arrange something for January anymore, but maybe if we aim for february and start planning now? What do you think?

Hi guys,
Sorry I left the ball drop on this. I am applying to an ERC grant and it has sucked all of my time. But the deadline is now on the 02.02, so things should ease then.
Let’s make a Feb event. @Ferranti @.***>, maybe we could wrap up what you prepared? Otherwise, what could we do?
Best,
F.

You tagged someone else :P, I guess when replying by email github can get tricked by tags.
maybe we could wrap up what you prepared? Otherwise, what could we do?
we could continue with the package development series. iirc, last time we simply went through the general package structure,
some more or less related follow-up themes
other ideas?
Hi all,
Sounds great. Shall we pencil in the date then? Feb 22nd at 15.30h?
Best,

Yes, let's start updating the website!
Any suggestions on what of the topics above to go through?
I think debugging and general performance tips (https://docs.julialang.org/en/v1/manual/performance-tips/) is always a good topic.
maybe preparing a session about debugging/profiling/optimizing requires a little more preparation work though? We would probably need some meaty enough code examples to have a meaningful demo?
Do you have some example / materials in mind you could use?
Otherwise we could leave that for March so we have more time for preparing it?
I think a friend of mine has potentially some old material. I’ll ask, but I’m fairly busy this and next week so probably anyhow good to do it in March instead.
Best, Martin

I have old (but not too old) material about metaprogramming which I could reuse this month, so I'd suggest the following:
what do you think?
what do you think?
Sounds great! Personally I would also like to learn when metaprogramming is advantegeous over other approaches for the same tasks. I heard the advice "avoid it if you can" from Steven Johnson's JuliaCon talk.
I heard the advice "avoid it if you can" from Steven Johnson's JuliaCon talk.
that's indeed a very nice talk where indeed he says that 90% of the time you dont need metaprogramming, but for the 10% when you need it, you really need it!
sooo @FabsOliveira and others, let's start brainstorming to get this back on track after summer break!
some ideas
Package development series: We started this after christmas, but if I recall correctly we only went through basic libraries structures, could continue with other topics, e.g.
these more "lecture style" talks are ok, but would be nice to also have some social activity, e.g. for the first "back from summer" could have a dinner at fatlizard like the first time or similar. Depending on the weather, also some outdoor activities (nothing fancy, could be as simple as playing some mölkky)

@FabsOliveira @trappmartin what do you think about having the "Greetings from JuliaCon" thing on 30.8?
Hi there, I will probably not find the time to do the code opt thing. I will have to think about what I could do in the future.
The "Greetings from JuliaCon" thing on 30.8 sounds great to me.
And thanks for reanimating this thread!
Great! @FabsOliveira do you think you can get a room (the usual one) for that day?
The greetings-from-Juliacon event sounds excellent! Let's go for it. Then we can have Jaan in September and pick-up the series in Oct.
As for the venue, what do you think of Mordor at the A-Grid? I think it is a more casual and easy-to-find space. I have made a pre-booking for 4-5.30 pm on the 30.08. If not, I can cancel and revert to the original room.
Cool, A grid looks superb. I wasn't aware of this option.
the room reservation sounds very good! thanks for it! I'll update the webpage and start the usual advertisement process (mailing list, julia slack, zulip, discourse)
@FabsOliveira @trappmartin should we also have a (self-paid!) back-from-summer dinner at fat lizard (or other places if preferred) like the first meeting? could be nice for bringing people together
@lucaferranti, yes, let's arrange something like that too. Fat Lizard is great, but I am happy to go wherever. The D20 tap room is fun, but no food. So is the Olarinpanimo tap room.
@jaantollander are you still in for the CSC talk in september?
I have also found a speaker for the october event (or september if Jaan prefers to move his). One of the core devs from Genie Framework volunteered to give a short talk on how to use Genie to build web-apps and interactive dashboards in Julia. Our first invited speaker
See you next week for the meetup :muscle:
btw, @jaantollander did you know we have a meetup next week? It will be a "greetings from JuliaCon" edition with highlights (and stickers) from juliacon, since Olli and I went there. I was under the impression I had already advertised this to you, but now I am not sure anymore, apologies. Would be super cool if you could come (and could advertise to CSC)
December / January
December 18thJanuary 15th, if someone else is submitting, we could have a pizza evening to finalize our submissions or similar support group eventDevelopment series
