Update the guide to reflect new AWS interface/options #31

Open commandcontrolit opened 6 years ago

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

I tried following the guide yesterday, but the changes and options in the AWS interface have changed so much that I couldn't make much progress.

I'm not familiar with Lambda or coding in general, but I can definitely follow a well documented guide. But I could not with the changes in AWS.

Can anyone help with updating this guide to reflect the updates in AWS? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

codingaintmything, I made one but don't know how to upload it here.

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

Dang.. maybe you can email?

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

It's a PDF that's a little more then 5mb

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

Alexa Roku.pdf

I also did a YouTube video on it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU1-6sPDbyg

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

Haha! You literally did a youtube video of it - thanks!

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

Your more then welcome, I hope it helps, if you have any questions I can help you with just let me know.

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

I gave up. As cool as this is, I just can't get it. Awesome skill and feature - wish they'd make it possible through something like the Harmony Hub.

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

What were you installing this on?

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

Windows - and that's part of the problem. I don't have a RPi3. I'm ready to buy one, but all of the steps even before them still don't line up to how the doc instructions read.

I just don't know enough about what I'm doing.

But thanks for your help

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

The Alexa/Roku skill can be frustrating at first. As a 47 year old I gave up on it several times and came back to it after a few weeks. When I finely got it working I decided to write the PDF and make the video so my 10 year old son could get it working if something happened to me. If you do get a Raspberry Pi 3 I have know doubt you can get it up and running. I would recommend you watch all my "Using A Raspberry Pi For Home Automation" videos. I think with you using windows your problem might be with Node, and as far as "I just don't know enough about what I'm doing." we were all there many times, just don't completely give up and you will learn more then you probably want to, but it will give you a great feeling of accomplishment.

Appreciate the vote of confidence! Here is what I'm purchasing.

I would buy the one below if you already have a HDMI cable. You will only need the HDMI cable for the instal setup, then you can run the Raspberry PI headless after that. I would also get a 64 GB card from Walmart instead of that 32 GB that come with the kit your looking at.

https://www.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry-Clear-Power-Supply/dp/B01C6EQNNK/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1515261704&sr=1-5&keywords=Raspberry+pi+3

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

Will do! Thanks for the tips!

As for that gateway, that's still the best one and place to get it right?

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

What do you mean by gateway? Amazon? if you mean Amazon then I would say yes. I have two Raspberry Pi 3's. I got both of them from Amazon. The first one I ordered was like the one you first pointed to. The second one is like the one I sent you a link too. You will want to download and use the newest Raspberry Pi OS, and that's why you will want the 64 GB card instead of the 32GB card. The newest Pi OS is pretty big and I'm sure there only going to get bigger as newer ones come out.

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

Make sure you have a TV that has HDMI.

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

Haha! Yes, no non-hdmi TV's in the house.

I meant the z-wave stick: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00X0AWA6E

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

Good ... it would suck if you ordered the Raspberry Pi and you couldn't set it up because you didn't have an HDMI ready TV! There are a lot of Home Automation things you can use a Raspberry Pi for, plus they don't use much in the way of power!

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

I'm not sure about the z-wave stick, I use to have a few z-wave devices but tossed them out long ago. I think the old X-10 devices used z-wave.

Cool - I forgot to mention that I got the build recommendation from a YouTuber who was helping viewers build a Home Assistant RPi box.

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

Sounds about where I'm headed!! Lol I'm not too far behind.

But what other good things are you using the RPis for?

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

The one I like the most is the HA Bridge. I bought a TV to use with my Lorex security camera system and have it mounted to the wall above my main TV and wanted to be able to turn it on and off with my Harmony (Using my voice and Amazon Echo) but everytime I did it would turn off my main TV "Switching Activity's" The only way I could find to over come this was to use HA Bridge which I have installed on my Raspberry Pi.

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

I also use it for the Mute function on my main TV so I don't have to say "Alexa, tell harmony to mute TV" I only have to say "Alexa, mute TV"

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

Whats the link to the video? "Cool - I forgot to mention that I got the build recommendation from a YouTuber who was helping viewers build a Home Assistant RPi box."

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

I'm sure you've heard of him. Search BRUH Automation on YouTube. Tons of material.

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

I use to watch all of his videos but he mostly talks about Home Assistant. I tried Home Assistant and didn't like it.

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

I guess everyone tries then all and sticks with what works best. I haven't tried anything as of yet and actually don't even know if I need to try them.

This all started with me wanting to search Roku using Alexa.. LOL

cmon69 commented 6 years ago

I think it comes down to what you want to do, and researching to see if it can be done. I have most of the Hubs (SmartThings, Hue, Harmony) already so Home Assistant just duplicates what I can already do with what I already have. I think I would use it if I had any z-wave stuff.

commandcontrolit commented 6 years ago

Yea I'm getting there. Don't want anything super special yet.

First Example, the iConnectHue app resolved.

I don't have many other things yet - 3x Ecobee3 with sensors, lights (Hue and Sengled), Hue motions, Hue Sensors and the hubs/bridges - Hue, Element and SmartThings.

So right
