Responsibility: PI Arnott and Vano will lead work supported by team.
I'd like to be a part of this task, even if just on the margins (or peanut gallery) as determining who is "at risk" will set the stage for who we work with and how. I anticipate I won't have much to contribute in terms of the modeling of impacts, but I'd like to be engaged to ensure that we are integrating the social factors that make the communities at risk in our determinations.
Yeah, it will be great to have your take on this one, Missy.
Task 3. Define a sub-set of at-risk communities and gather local community information. Communities identified as vulnerable in Task 2 will be compared with those identified through Tasks 7 and 8 in Activity Area II. From this, 5-10 communities will be identified for further exploration. Refining this subset will also include a preliminary assessment of the communities’ constructed water storage capacity, with a lower priority placed on locations with access to more storage. Once this subset is defined, a more complete picture of the communities’ water system will be explored. This includes: (a) local climate change studies already done or underway, (b) water sources (surface v. ground water), (c) water demands, and (d) water infrastructure. Non- climate features such as storage potential, seniority of water rights, and projected demand are important in determining risk/vulnerability of water systems (Vano et al. 2010a,b). We intend to recognize these alongside climate vulnerabilities, especially as these are the foundations from which communities can adapt.
