Next-gen interactivity for data modeling #3

Abstract

We are creating capabilities for modelers and data scientists to exploit diagnostics earlier in their model building dev cycle. Visualizations are not just for the end results! The process of model development needs more attention from visual diagnostic tools. We have a fledgeling GUI, extensions to Matplotlib, and some exciting examples that we want to push into Jupyter. We want more community input on these ideas. https://github.com/robclewley/fovea, http://robclewley.github.io

(Presentation could be in any format, really: long/short, exhibit, workshop, talk. I actually prefer NOT to be a talk but I could talk about something else)

@robclewley sounds great, thanks for being flexible!

Fovea sounds awesome. I'm assuming your the SoC mentor: will the grantee be joining as well, even remotely?

Based on some of the feedback we have been getting, it sounds like modeling and simulation is shaping up to be a big part of the work people are doing. Perhaps we start thinking about a "Jupyter in M&S" workshop topic, and it sounds like your breadth of experience would make you great candidate for the (co-)leadership role.

Perhaps we frame the fovea content as a demo, find it some friends, and start looking for some problems and datasets in this space. Thoughts? cc @tonyfast

I am the GSOC mentor, yes. The mentee might join remotely, yes, depending on the format (are there any student travel funds, @bollwyvl @tonyfast ?). I'd be happy to (co-)lead such a M&S session of some kind. Demo + finding it some friends is absolutely what we'd like. I think there are lots of obvious applications for fovea, but we need some serious backend expertise to help us implement the tricky interfacing through to jupyter and js.

Alright, we've slotted this in to the science-focused workshop!

We should also discuss getting your GSoC mentee dialed in to the BYOC workshop: it's a great starting point for some fun hacking!
