COMET InSAR Workshop 2021 #2061

1. Who you are

we are a team at the University of Leeds within UK's Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics (COMET) - we focus particularly on satellite interferometric (InSAR) measurements of terrain deformation - we process large amounts of InSAR data and publish in open access, see our https://comet.nerc.ac.uk/COMET-LiCS-portal

2. A few details about the event/course/context

COMET InSAR Workshop used to be a popular (and competitive) live international workshop where top (UK) experts shared their knowledge about InSAR, modelling of geophysical processes, or discussed anything seismic/volcanic. We have attempted for an online form last year but faced many technical difficulties.
This year, we plan for 2 days workshop (some details including schedule are here: https://gitlab.com/comet_licsar/licsar_documentation/-/wikis/COMET-InSAR-workshop-2021 ) that will happen on 23-24 November.

3. If money is changing hands (attendees pay a fee, speaker is getting paid, free, etc)

everything is free. including data, processing tools etc. speakers are not financially rewarded

4. A link to the repository you are using

The practicals are in 3 sessions. Each session will run from different repository, that are: The repositories are:

5. What type of event it is:

6. How many people you expect to attend the event

150-500+ last year, we were limiting number of participants, as we got approx. 500 registrations. That year, we have put notice months in advance. This year we put the notice in less than a month in advance (29th Oct). Still, we should count with possibility that there will be again 500 registrations this year. Is this amount feasible for your resources?

7. The exact times and dates of the event(s) (with timezone information)

session 1: 23 Nov 2021, 15:45-17:30 GMT - https://gitlab.com/comet_licsar/licsbas
session 2: 24 Nov 2021, 11:00-13:00 GMT - https://github.com/andwatson/interseismic_practical session 3: 24 Nov 2021, 16:00-17:30 GMT - https://github.com/matthew-gaddes/insar_workshop

8. How do you plan to give mybinder.org a shout out at the event

We have already added binder logo to our flyer shared through our LiCS Portal website and Twitter. We will provide the logo also to some other relevant material, e.g. the logo will be visible in recorded webinars etc. We will also verbally acknowledge mybinder.org during the practical sessions.

Many thanks in advance for your feedback - I guess there is some time (a month) to communicate details.
(related to disk space and RAM, I think the 2 GB RAM in your nodes is ok, I can confirm about disk space after our tests if needed, but I think we should be in limit of some 1 GB of disk space per user)

Thank you for opening your first issue in this project! Engagement like this is essential for open source projects! :hugs:
If you haven't done so already, check out Jupyter's Code of Conduct. Also, please try to follow the issue template as it helps other other community members to contribute more effectively. welcome You can meet the other Jovyans by joining our Discourse forum. There is also an intro thread there where you can stop by and say Hi!
Welcome to the Jupyter community! :tada:

hi everyone,

can you please give some preliminary feedback on this request? we have already 260 registered participants, and we expect some more will join.

thank you,

Milan L.

I think 500 should be fine, might be tricky if it gets above that.

We normally bump the quotas by adjusting the mybinder.org config a few days before the event. If you haven't heard from us please feel free to remind us, or if you want you can open a PR like https://github.com/jupyterhub/mybinder.org-deploy/pull/1801 a few days before.

Hi. Requesting increase of resources for COMET InSAR Workshop 2021, to bump to 500 users, for following repositories and times:
session 1: 23 Nov 2021, 16:00-17:30 GMT - https://gitlab.com/comet_licsar/licsbas
session 2: 24 Nov 2021, 11:00-13:00 GMT - https://github.com/andwatson/interseismic_practical
session 3: 24 Nov 2021, 16:00-17:30 GMT - https://github.com/matthew-gaddes/insar_workshop

Additionally, please increase the timeout of inactivity, as we often get kernel connection lost after short time being idle.

thank you.

espiritocz commented 2 years ago

hi,

noted the 'bumps' - so are the limits set to run our workshop? i saw comments 'per day' - so is it ok that session 1 will shift a bit (same day, but should start at 15:30 GMT / half hour earlier)

cheers!

manics commented 2 years ago

Yes, the quotas have been bumped for the whole period. The inactivity/idle time is unchanged as we can't configure that for individual repos.

Good luck with the workshop!

espiritocz commented 2 years ago

many thanks!

including binder logo here and there, let me know what you prefer as a feedback.

cheers!
