So far when I've switched to Estuary before exiting Kodi and then switched to Arctic Horizon after Kodi was safely open Kodi hasn't crashed but I haven't done it enough times to know whether it's a viable workaround. I also had one crash within Kodi that I forgot about. After a movie ended and I went back to the home page I got kicked out of Kodi as soon as the home-screen widgets began to refresh. I was not able to open Kodi again after that without wiping all of the Kodi data. Kodi has never crashed in the middle of watching a video or listening to music--it always crashes from the Arctic Horizon home screen.
Can you grab me a log of when the crash happens? Even if you don't have debug logging turned on, Kodi will still create a log file (it will just be less detailed than with debug logging turned on).
Hey @jurialmunkey here is a couple of log files for you. Artic has been crashing alot and i have not idea why. I've been working with other skins recently to see if they are capable with kodi 19 but some scripts like kodi65 or extended info have not been working especially the colorbox script. kodi_stacktrace-19.0 Git_20210218-f44fdfbf67-20210410-235358.txt kodi_stacktrace-19.0 Git_20210218-f44fdfbf67-20210411-200234.txt kodi_stacktrace-19.0 Git_20210218-f44fdfbf67-20210411-200250.txt kodi_stacktrace-19.0 Git_20210218-f44fdfbf67-20210411-200312.txt kodi.log kodi.old.log
Hope some of these crash reports help a little and hope your having a great day.
Most of these crash issues are related to an addon you have installed that is using ReuseLanguage invoker in their addon.xml . You can go though your addons and set this manually in addon.xml to = false and see if it helps . its my experience that almost all my crashs were solved when i made sure this was set to false .
There could still be something else going on . but random crashing on widget loading , generally points to the addon that those widgets are pointing at is causing the crash . and 9/10 times its having reuselanaguage invoker set to true
I'm not technically adept enough to go through all of the addon XML files and manually change the values. I spent so much more time the last 3 days troubleshooting and reinstalling Kodi than actually using Kodi to play stuff that I'm trying out a couple of other skins. I haven't found anything I like nearly as much as Arctic Horizon but I don't have the time or patience to deal with the instability issues. I am going to check back here every day and in the other bug reports and skin updates to see if it looks like the problem might have been resolved but until then I can't see myself switching back.
Hey thank you, I will do a fresh install soon and will find the addon that is causing this. It could be due to the shortcuts tho cause a long time, I've been working with skins back then and I imported my old skin shortcuts file from kodi 18.
@jhs39 - the issue though is if it is an addon causing the crash loading as a widget then no other skin is going to solve that problem if you use the same combination of widgets in another skin.
However you said this was on a clean install in which case it is a different issue and without you providing a debug log it is difficult to diagnose
On a clean installation it was fine but when I was in the process of adding my addons and the skin shortcuts and the icons and labels and stuff with Seren, Kaito, YouTube, Twitch, SoundCloud, Newson, ieg. I start it up and it starts crashing for some odd reason. To prevent it from crashing, I go instantly to settings at the beginning until the skin builds its menu.
Btw this is the same thing that happens with the osmc skin for kodi 19 so it could be due to a kodi bug or script but not too sure.

This sounds like a issue with a specific addon then . I'd suggest disabling (temp just to test ) Seren and Kaito , and any other unofficial 3rd party addons to see if it goes away , then slowly add them back . you will also prob want to remove the widgets that point to them , but its not a huge deal (will just cause error notifications when it can't find the addon ) BUT it shouldn't crash IF it was those addons .
just start disabling things till you find the one thats causing it . It almost certainly is due to either Seren or Kaito or another addon having Reuse language invoker set to true / enabled . At least in Seren i know you can go into its settings / options and at the bottom of the last setting page there is a option to disable it . Future versions of Seren will disable this by default on new installs as its causing issues .
I really don't think this is a skin issue . its only a "skin issue" in the fact AH like lots of other skins have widgets and they point to addons . causing that addon the widget is pointed to , to load specific menus (thats all a widget is , is a special way to display a addons menu/page/section ) . but the same thing IF its the addon causing the crash would happen if you loaded multiple sections at once in said addon (not really possible any other way but yeh )
I don't have any addons like Seren installed and have a very stripped-down set-up because I don't use Kodi to stream any media except what is on my own personal server. I don't have any installed add-ons to disable other than information scrapers from the official Kodi repository and the Backup addon which doesn't run on a schedule so it really shouldn't be doing anything unless I am actively using the addon. I was under the impression that since different skins have different home screen designs, offer different widget options, and utilize different dependencies that widgets causing a home-screen crash on one skin wouldn't necessarily do the same on another skin. Initially, I was certain the crashes in Arctic Horizon were being caused by a specific smart playlist because it seemed like every time I made any changes to that playlist there would be a crash later but if I left the playlist alone I wasn't having any issues--then I completely deleted what I thought was the problem playlist but I still had a crash several hours later. Because of all the reinstalls, I don't think I would have had any useful logs left to provide.
@jhs39 OHHH ! i'm sorry , yes need debug log . Sorry was confused with other user . My bad .
if you could try to replicate it and if you can while you have debug log enabled . to get the log there is a Official Kodi log uploader app that works great .
Jurial would need a debug log / crash log and the exact steps / things you were doing when crash happened . Also if you can list what widgets you had and where they were pointed would prob help .
its a weird one that could be caused by any number of things . Random crashs in kodi can be some of the hardest ones to find .
Again i'm sorry i got you confused with the other user
Yeah these are two separate issues it appears.
@Goldenfreddy0703 will need to follow your advice @SerpentDrago as his issue is almost certainly the third party addon issue
@jhs39 - I'm not sure if you missed my comment a few above but if you can get me debug log showing the issue happening that would be much appreciated - hopefully that will give me some indication of what is happening or at least what the skin/kodi is doing at the time. Otherwise I'm just stumbling around in the dark because I almost never have skin related crashes.
Ok but @SerpentDrago was right about the Language invoker in Seren and today i disabled it and Artic has not crashed once today without any errors. I'm not sure about @jhs39 issues but if i were me starting a clean installation. I would probably go into portable data then userdata and clean the addon_data folder so you can start fresh with the addons and the settings and go from there.
I am having the same problem. It crashes about 15%-20% of the time with a single widget and like 50% of the time with 2 widgets. Yes, the Seren widgets are what is crashing it. Yes I turned off ReuseLanguage. I use the same exact widget config in the Auramod skin, and it loads fine.
No idea what is happening... the kodi log seems rather useless. The only thing I notice is on a successful run the final line of the crash log (CIRServerSuite::Connect: connecting to: 127.0.0.1:24000) is pushed back by a lot, and instead is immediately replaced by:
2021-04-16 23:33:08.219 T:25564 INFO <general>: CPythonInvoker(2, C:\Kodi\portable_data\addons\script.skinshortcuts\default.py): script successfully run

It is seren this was figured this long ago if you read past issues. Switch to 18.9 or use another add on.

How can it be Seren if I'm able to load another skin using the exact same widgets/shortcuts and it works perfectly?
Same here but something between seren and horizon.
Ok guys, I have reported this bug to seren. Some skins keep crashing cause of seren widgets. If I were me I would use tmdb helper.
I thought it was due to skin shortcuts or skin service helper.
I tested seren widgets on osmc, artic, aeon silvo, auramod, etc.
I since have been using Silvo from kodi repo and have over 8 widgets no problems.

Wait I'm a little bit dumb. I'm sorry, the reason why you have not been crashing is probably cause you have your seren widgets on a different menu so when you start up kodi on silvo, your probably greeted to a tab that has no widgets like power or settings which is why seren does not have a problem with your skin. There is a 10% chance that it could crash tho.
When I was doing some testing. I had no crashes but when I tested it on main start menu where the widgets were on, it crashed.
True. I am using firestick 4K. All skins work with seren widgets for me accept horizon. Both are my favorites but had to change. Crashes are frustrating with a low powered device takes minutes to reload.
No my widgets load on main page that opens. Yes in horizon I set up open page to settings and less crashes but that got old.

Omg yes. I hate android devices that limit you on performance and low power. I wish I could put auramod or artic horizon on my Google chromecast but they were so slow with loading that I had to change it to osmc skin cause of how beautiful it is and how less performance it is.
My recommendation incase you want a full media only kodi setup is a raspberry pi 4 with Osmc or Librelec that basically can run any skin you put to it.
Btw the seren crash is fixed thanks to the new update.
Everything was working fine for me until Thursday when I started to have a problem with Kodi crashing immediately after opening while the home-screen widgets are loading. I'm not sure how to take an error log because the problem isn't predictable--Kodi doesn't crash when I'm actually using it--I can be watching movies or listening to music for hours without any problems. Eventually, I exit Kodi to use a different app on my Shield Pro 2019 or to turn everything off. About half the time Kodi won't open successfully and crashes while the home screen widgets are loading.
I tried deleting kodi/userdata/addons_data/script.skinshortcuts and kodi/userdata/addon_data/plugin.video.themoviedb.helper/database while Kodi was closed which you suggested in another report of crashing during startup but neither had any effect on Kodi being able to open.
I tried deleting all Kodi data and restoring a backup from a week earlier when Kodi was still stable.
I tried completely uninstalling Kodi, installing Kodi from the Play Store, and restoring a backup from earlier when Kodi was still stable.
I tried a clean install of Kodi without using a backup.
The issue only seems to occur when I'm using Arctic Horizon as my default skin.
I have no third-party addons installed--only the preinstalled Kodi addons, the dependencies for Arctic Horizon, the Audio Database Album and Artist Information Providers from the official Kodi repository, and the Multi-Weather addon from the official repository.
I'm running Kodi on an Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 box. There are two external drives hooked up directly to the Shield via USB--a Samsung SSD drive is being used as adopted storage because the internal storage on the Shield became insufficient and I started getting error messages--but that was nearly a month ago. A second HDD drive is attached with media. The rest of my media streams from an HP Server computer running Windows 10 via SMB.
I stream media from the same computer with Plex and Emby on the Nvidia Shield and neither encounter problems. Kodi crashing seconds after opening started several days ago after daily use for months without any problems and it only seems to happen when I'm using Arctic Horizon as my default skin.
I tried to figure out if any Kodi addons might have auto-updated Wednesday or Thursday that could be causing a conflict with Arctic Horizon but didn't see anything. I don't really know where to begin in terms of disabling add-ons for troubleshooting because my set-up is already very stripped down in terms of Kodi add-ons.
