wip: Got the app to run

The fixes generally fall into three categories:

• Propagating the trait bounds everywhere
• Made certain trait methods explicit to help the compiler
• Removed the Default trait from State and managed it manually

All of my notes are in C-style comment blocks (/ /). Let me know if you have any questions about what I did.
