Hi all,
I've extended the Bug Bash to September 30, 2019 since we haven't had any reports yet. Next time that I have a few mins free, I can do some testing and probably 1) come up with the first one (bug) plus 2) generate some test files that everyone can use (e.g. PHYLIP and other format files matching input expectations for the PIrANHA functions).
But please--join the Bug Bash!! Email me directly or DM me on Twitter @justincbagley if you need more information. Also feel free to ask questions here in the comments for this issue.

Given the colloquial/more personalized nature of the first part of the original message above, which was addressed to specific GitHub users, I have reposted the Bug Bash announcement in a new issue here (https://github.com/justincbagley/piranha/issues/4) where we will work on it. So, from this point forward, please add any comments/bug reports to that linked issue (#4). Thank you.

Dear @camilocalderon, @jomare1188, @llq0325, and @qliugithub,
PIrANHA and You
Each of you previously starred my software repository, PIrANHA, prior to May 2019. Thanks so much for that :+1:. Subsequently, I made the PIrANHA repo private during a complete rewrite and overhaul of the software (which caused it to lose all of your stars!), and since then I have posted several public pre-releases with the new distribution structure under a BSD license. We just reached v0.3-alpha.2, a new alpha version that is ready for testing!!!!
Invitation to New Alpha Release: v0.3a2
I am writing to invite you to test and star our software again. It would be great if you checked out the latest release, which I am sure you will find of even greater interest than previous releases.
Please install the new PIrANHA software with Homebrew (directions in updated wiki pages here: https://github.com/justincbagley/piranha/wiki/3.-Getting-Started), and let me know if you have any problems.
Since you used PIrANHA previously, I would greatly appreciate any input on how you'd like to see the software updated or improved; for example, if you would like for me to add new features, then you can submit a request in-line below. PIrANHA is now written as a single main script
piranha
that controls a set of functions (for a list of available functions, seepiranha -f list
, or find the list here). Let me know if you like the capabilities of the functions. It would also be extremely helpful if you tested some of the functions and could confirm that they work on your machine or relay any bugs or error messages and the context.Bug Bash - and Prize Giveaway! 🐛 🐞
We want PIrANHA to become as useful and stable as possible. We are currently in an alpha release, which means that PIrANHA is good software that should mostly work, but that likely contains some parts (e.g. options) that are broken and need fixing. Thus, a main goal currently is to discover as many bugs as possible.
To this end, you're invited to join the PIrANHA Bug Bash (2 months - from July 30 - September 30, 2019)! Any interested biologist/bioinformatician is also invited, or feel free to invite them yourselves. Here's how it works: take a little spare time over the next 4 weeks, test as many functions as possible using your own files (or I could make some test DNA sequence alignments and VCF files), and report the bugs as follows:
Preferably, bug reports will be brief and submitted as independent issues, to which I or others can reply. Score of 1 point awarded for each bug reported. The goal is to find and detail the most bugs over the Bug Bash period. All biologists with GitHub accounts are eligible.
A winner with >5 points (validated) and 5 new function suggestions will receive this free Charles Darwin poster (free shipping, U.S. only)!
Free Poster Prize!!! 🎁 :gift: :gift: 👀

I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to improve PIrANHA!
Thanks,

PS - Please feel free to pass this message on to friends and collaborators interested in phylogenetics and phylogeography, who might like to try out PIrANHA! Thanks!!
