Its a very unique name and am curious how you came up with it?

I assume it's a pun, given that headgear can spread lice. As you can see in lice.h, LICE is an acronym (or perhaps a backronym) for "Lightweight Image Compositing Engine". So licecap is a Lightweight Image Compositing Engine Capturing program, or a licecap.

I think the answer is pretty good. I'd suggest it would be in included in FAQ section within the site in order to close it (in order to satisfy user curiosity more easily). 😄

I use this app every now and then, and every time I experience the same thing:

I had something installed for creating gifs, what was its name
Something something gif, hmm...
Trying to search "gif" on Spotlight, doesn't come up
I have to remember it because other gif recorders are so bad...
Ahh, it didn't include "gif" in its name, it was something really weird
Some thinking, and I remember the "licecap" keyword

App names most of the time don't have a direct reference to what they do, but for a gif app my mind just can't seem to accept this and default to words like giffer, gifsky, gifmaker :D
