Streamline process for broadcasting live

I think there are ways we can streamline how we're broadcasting, capturing and distributing live radio. Let's try to document the current process and determine ways we can streamline in this issue.

@JustJazzcat We might want to test out https://www.mixcloud.com/live/ as it provides a way to go live (w/ video at the same time) - the broadcasts (audio only) are then archived automatically. FWIW the streaming software they recommend to use with Mixcloud is OBS Studio. https://help.mixcloud.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013022760

The same software is widely used for video recording and live streaming. https://obsproject.com/

Possibly you and @justjazz are already using for the Just Jazz series?

Not sure if that is what we are using. I see that mixcloud allows you to broadcast on many platforms at once and does not incur licensing problems which means no shut downs. That, of course is for the $15/mo upgrade

Mixcloud Live doesn't yet multicast to multiple platforms or provide a way to embed the live show (until it's archived).

OBS Studio does provide a way to do that - https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-studio-stream-to-multiple-platforms-or-channels-at-once.932/

So ideally we'd broadcast on the site (same as now) and Mixcloud. Other platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Twitch.tv, etc) are options but they do risk being taken down.

If you're down with testing out, I'd recommend starting a 30 day free trial https://www.mixcloud.com/pro/ and seeing if you can download and set up OBS (see some of these links) https://github.com/AMTVDigital/productions/issues/7#issuecomment-772821502

So you have Audio Hijack connected to AirTime Pro? I'm not sure if there's a way to connect that to Mixcloud, but I'll look into it.

I'd like to compare price/features w/ some other solutions.

@JustJazzcat Not sure I realized you were on the premium plan - looking over the features, it's probably way more than you need right now.

If you're open to other options, we might want to test out https://radio.co/. You get a lot more features than AirTimePro (https://radio.co/product-tour/all-features) and could probably start at a less costly tier (https://radio.co/pricing). They also have much better documentation about options for going live - https://help.radio.co/en/collections/625095-live-broadcasting https://help.radio.co/en/articles/2070024-audio-hijack

They also have Mixcloud integration and I'm asking them if they're going to support Mixcloud Live - https://help.radio.co/en/articles/2162869-publish-live-shows-and-dj-mixes-to-mixcloud

On the website end, the Theme you paid for also supports Radio.co, so the player would work the same. I'm also asking how migration would work, but I think it would be pretty easy since you haven't created many playlists or scheduled shows (right?).

That all said, it might be worth a 7 day free trial and/or booking a demo https://radio.co/book-a-demo

If you decide to switch we can leverage their support and https://radio.co/radio-university for help setting up whatever we need.

@JustJazzcat I downloaded Audio Hijack and got a Mixcloud live trial just to see if I could get the multiple streams thing to work.

And it did!...at least for audio-only streams.

Assuming you're using the latest version of Audio Hijack, you should just be able to add 'Live Stream' blocks to your current setup.

I'm totally new to Audio Hijack so your setup is probably different. This seems to be working for me!

Until YouTube, Facebook, Twitch.tv, etc provide a way to legally steam copywritten music, I think Mixcloud + the website(s) would be pretty great.

Less of an issue with livestreaming video and performances!

I did not download Radio.co yet just because I knew I would not have time to get into it. I did activate my Twitch and check out OBS and Restream.io. Don't have it all worked out yet.

OBS + https://restream.io/ will get you out to multiple platforms but only MixCloud won't take down the archives. Great setup tho for livestreaming the Just Jazz performances!

You can try free for 30 days. Think the $15/mo thereafter will be worth it since it's legal and all the livestreams can be archived. Worth checking out I think.

Did you also stream video w/ OBS https://github.com/AMTVDigital/productions/issues/7#issuecomment-772833847 or the multi-stream setup we were trying to figure out here? https://github.com/AMTVDigital/productions/issues/7#issuecomment-774390198

Even if you're doing audio only (to the site and Mixcloud Live at the same time) it seems like you're already picking up additional listeners and new followers https://www.mixcloud.com/live/soundsandcolorsradio/ <-- 61 listeners for an impromptu session seems pretty good!

If you're able to schedule and post a regular day/time... use the same format... I think the audience could really grow... maybe you'll also have something to syndicate and monetize.

Only thing is, I set the audio to go through my board, but it must have picked up the audio from my computer because people said they could hear me cursing and talking to myself. I have no idea what it sounded like but, I also recorded and broadcasted on Sounds and Colors and it came out fine. I did use OBS and briefly got the hang of it. I could not find the stream afterwards. I did get an email yesterday with the info but I did not look. It may only be audio.

It’s hard to commit to a regular show. When I do know ahead of time, I’ll do the proper posts.

Even if you're doing audio only (to the site and Mixcloud Live at the same time) it seems like you're already picking up additional listeners and new followers https://www.mixcloud.com/live/soundsandcolorsradio/ <-- 61 listeners for an impromptu session seems pretty good!

If you're able to schedule and post a regular day/time... use the same format... I think the audience could really grow... maybe you'll also have something to syndicate and monetize.

So it sounded like when you go live on YouTube!?!

I'm sure there's a way to prevent that - maybe we can find a time when you can go live for a shorter period of time and we can test.

Assuming the quality is good, that would be the most efficient way to go.

It’s hard to commit to a regular show. When I do know ahead of time, I’ll do the proper posts.

What if we're able to streamline the process (including possibly moving to a better/cheaper automation system like https://radio.co/) that would enable you to record/schedule a show if you're unable to go live at the same time.

The shows are really good - people would tune in if they knew they were happening every week!

Yes, that archive is not one from Mixcloud. Yes, we can do a test. I never have anyone to let me know what's happening on the other end. I did look at Radio.co. It does have some things I like. Right now, I pay $99 for 150 gigs of music on my station. Radio.com is $99 for 50 gigs of music. I can't afford $179 per month for 250 gigs of music

According to https://radio.co/pricing 50GB of storage is enough for around 12,500 tracks. Seems like that should be plenty.

How many tracks / how much storage are you currently using?

Do you need that much? Are all the tracks just on shuffle mode? Seems like you wouldn't need all that if there were more playlists and shows programmed....or mixing in more Live.
