kevincal you're correct in that location. I've submitted an update to the readme file https://github.com/jvtm/pyambit/pull/1 to have it updated. I've also had more success using this https://github.com/brianhayes/ambit2gpx hope to move it to a simple mac app to make the exports easier.

Thanks for the comments. Closing this as I just merged the readme update pull request. In the future I plan to make a copy of all my local data files before they are destroyed by the sync application. I've noticed that different sports / settings give a little bit different data files.

Also the movescount.com GPX export is now more complete, so it's possible to compare the output files. IIRC, Suunto (of course...) doesn't use Garmin extensions for heart rate etc.
