Move the logic from inside routes, into functions

This along with #17, can act to secure the API. Need to restrict operations that can be accessed publically

At the current juncture, I believe this needs to be thought out more. Unsure as to how exactly we should do the abstracting, but so far it doesn't seem extremely necessary yet given our setup.
