503/504 errors on posting comments #157

Yes today and yesterday I got “504 Gateway Time-out nginx/0.8.53” when trying to leave a reply on research notes. I tried two different notes and could never post a comment. This has happened before, but I am not sure what error I got. I am pretty sure I got a Service Unavailable message in the last two weeks when trying to reply to a research note.

Previously it seems he was getting 503 errors instead. I believe this is because users are presented with a 503 error if their comments are moderated (via Akismet) and nginx is not able to resolve the page (getting a 503) so it then reports a 504 timeout error. If my theory is correct, I can disable the Akismet behavior and this should go away.

Just tracking the issue here.

OK - i've turned off the 503 error settings and if your comment is held for moderation you should simply be redirected to the site again.

If you do happen to come across the 503 or 504 errors even now, please do complain and we'll know that my theory was incorrect.

Sounds like #168 (merged into this) is a resurfacing of this bug. I bet it's to do with spam filtering.
