I had this crazy thought... what if instead of highlighting the interested region, we highlight the inverse?
I would actually like to use a darker highlight background face, and darken the text around the region instead (leaving the region without any added fontification), sort of a "spotlight" effect.
The rationale is that the highlight face often interferes (slightly) with regular font-locking faces. But if this happens in the text around it instead, it doesn't matter. You still have the illusion of highlighting, but without the interference for the active region.
