I'm really keen on this feature, but I can't find it in the app.

You say it was implemented in r25051.  I'm using r25475 (release 1.8.7).  I'm 
looking in the settings dialog and there is a space to enter "Tab size" but 
nothing to select whether tab inserts spaces or tab characters.

What am I missing?

We added this feature to the development trunk, which will be in v1.9 series
If you wish to evaluate the new features, download the nightly build.
