great app, here a couple of ideas:
- integrate with geotools (alternative: with udig)
- use gekmllib (http://code.google.com/p/gekmllib/) to parse kml.
- use jgdal to integrate even more data ("raw" satelite images mostly)

i have already made some kind of geotools/JTS mapping with KML, if you are 
intersted.

very nice so far
