This partially addresses https://github.com/kabisa/maji/issues/210. I've only copied the changes that I had to make for the Maji-like project I'm currently working on.

@ljpengelen thanks! This looks good. While it probably doesn't offer 100% compatibility, I'm OK merging this already as it at least improves things, agreed?
