I decided to work on the Mac target, starting with your change with "java --version" to "java -version". Unfortunately, there were a lot of problems in the code:

Changes in what to expect when running "java -version" as the version string changes;
Code to check the OS was wrong for Mac (found out here);
Bad table entry for JRE for Mac;
Different path for chmod on Mac, etc.

It's starting to work somewhat. Thanks.
