Mumin:
- Logic level converter is found: cheap($2 ), simple. There are two rx-tx pairs 
on one brekaout. Check: http://www.robotshop.ca/sfe-logic-level-converter.html
- Encoders are to be decided.

This thing ROCKS, works with 5 V, 1.7g accelerometer(x,y) + 300 deg/sec gyro(z)
