This is a proposal for a feature very useful for GIS, mapping services, etc.
1. ability to rapidly turn the background on and off (probably would be
worth of including the background in the layer menu if it is set)
2. ability to set for any layer (other than the background), a color for the
fill. so that would be the sixth column in the layer table (i would make it
the second column, after visibility). setting this color would change the fill
color of all objects on that layer. conflict resolution on group/individual
colorings are pretty straight-forward..
imagine these usecases: the designer has a layer for buildings, another for
roads, another for rivers and has a background in the form of a satellite
image for this place.
he would like to set all buildings too one consistent color. all roads to
another and all rivers to another. then he would like to check from time to
time how his map looks without the background..
