This is notoriosly difficult with pdflatex.... The best solution would be to switch to LuaTeX or XeTex, but I don't really want to break compatibility just because of the font...

I don't see a simple solution to this problem... I would simply recommend somebody to turn back to the default mode font if it is really bad. Somebody who uses LuaTeX or XeTex would maybe use fontspec by default.

TL;DR: Won't fix
