Moving OSX notification to something other than Growl

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install Growl 1.3 through the OSX app store on OSX lion
2. Follow the wiki for setting up growl notifications
3. don't get growl notifications

There must be some incompatibilities with the new gntp, it doesn't register the 
app.

Growl 1.3 is a paid app, so I'm looking for alternatives (e.g. bundling Growl 
1.2 into the app, or using another notification solution). I won't force anyone 
to buy a paid app just to use the notifier.

Growl isn't persé paid, you can build it yourself for free. The app store 
download however, does cost money. But can't you just make it compatible with 
1.3 too instead of breaking 1.2 functionality?
