There have been numerous breaking GIMP API changes from 2.99.18 to 3.0.0-RC1. Thankfully, these should take much less time to incorporate compared to the changes between GIMP 2.10 and 2.99 (which involved updating the entire code base to Python 3 and GTK 3).
This is the last batch of breaking changes to the GIMP 3.0 API according to the GIMP developers, so no more ports will be necessary (until GIMP 4.0 in a distant future, that is).
