as temp solution I can suggest to use this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/the-addon-bar/ but it would be
great to be correctly integrated with new FF

IMO: There really isn't a way to fix this, you need to install the addon-bar
extension.

Even with addon-bar installed Nagios-Checker is not visible. Its not available
in Custimize-Mode either.

I'm now stuck on FF28 because of this issue on my work laptop. I haven't tried
the addon-bar yet, I don't want to upgrade and then have to downgrade again
until there's a confirmed fix.

Oh my - tried the wrong add-on plugin:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-add-on-bar/
works well with
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/the-addon-bar/

Just to make the workaround complete: after installing the-addon-bar, the
nagios icon can be dragged to the top bar in customize mode. After that, you
can make the addon bar invisible again.
Since this works, I think the nagios-addon just needs minor adjustment to make
it work correctly without the-addon-bar.
