The index of the selected ship often will refer to a different ship when the length of the list grows or shrinks.
Noted in UmoSpace138.html

At least you can't end up with an out-of-bounds selection anymore.

Confirmed still an issue in new targeting system.

New targeting system is based on pointing at ships rather than selecting an index, so this has been irrelevant for some time. Closed at b344.
