I found an issue where the benches weren't running due to a feature flag missing, then fell down a rather epic rabbit hole.

• adding more feature flag testing in CI
• various test things happen via make now so it can be run locally
• codespell fixin'
• markdown linting
• loads more test coverage
• clippy calming
• 🍰
