By non-informative do you mean leaving it undefined?

Yes, an improper uniform prior over [0, Inf).

I wouldn't worry about investigating this too much: one can get a lot of DTs with that prior even running 8 schools!

Yes, this is on the back burner. I'm just curious why it would impact the model when not actually being used.
