Viability of Using Dashcam Footage? #148

Closed ghost closed 6 years ago

The OpenStreetCam application is clearly a work-in-progress and until those issues are resolved, it's of very little use to some people... Myself included.

But what about the dashcams in my car?

I have a front dashcam and a rear dashcam - both of which capture relatively high-quality footage... And as you would expect, these can run all day without issue.

Is it viable to use the footage from these for OpenStreetCam and why/why not? If so, can we have the respective option added to the OpenStreetCam website?

Your images would need to be individually geo tagged(thus why you use your phone as it has an integrated gps).

To do that with a dashcam you'd have to record a gpx on your phone then time sync each photo with the gpx track (really a pain and very manual and error prone)

Ah, well that's a shame. It was a thought though...

Feel free to close or delete this "issue" then (I can't seem to find an option to do so on my end).

there are plenty of dashcams that have built-in gps which provides a trackfile eg. gpx format side-by-side of a recording there really is no need for an external gps device in those cases

dashcams would have to record in jpg as well and they usually record in mpeg/mp4

and before you say so does the mobile app, it's different they are using the video as a compression method for photos(each frame is a photo at high res) vs an actual video each frame is relatively low res(2MP)

As a side note, we're now working with https://www.waylens.com for a deep integration of OSC in the firmware ( including direct upload ). I've been testing that for a while and indeed it's way less friction than using a phone, and it's always connected to the car through the OBD. Stay tuned for some further news on that!
