OBDLink LX not working with OSC #212

Open bipbipBE opened 5 years ago

Hi All,

As suggested by OpenStreetCam (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OpenStreetCam/OBD2), I just bought a OBDLink LX. While there's no problem to use it with the OBDLink app, I'm not able to connect it using OSC (OpenStreetCam) app for Android and it's not depending on if OBDLink app is in use or not. Could it be a Bluetooth Low Energy issue ? I'm running a Samsung S7 Edge and I'm not using another BT device at the same time.

Thanks in advance for your answers and comments,

hey @bipbipBE can you maybe attach a screenshot or offer us a step-by-step representation of the issue? What happens when you try to pair the OBD with OSC?

@bipbipBE it looks like your screenshots did not come through via email. You may need to reply directly on Github.

Hi,

First of all, I plug the OBD dongle :

obd1

After this I enable Bluetooth on my phone and push the “connect” pin on the dongle, so both are paired as the OBDLink app shows :

obd2

After this I start OSC app and go to the OBD submenu, choose OBDLink LX device :

obd3

and get immediately this message :

obd4

What’s curious is if the dongle isn’t connected to the phone, I also get the message, but it takes more time …

Regards,

JP

Hey @bipbipBE, I checked out the dongle model you ordered and I'm afraid it only runs on Bluetooth, while OSC currently supports Bluetooth LE and Wi-fi enhanced OBDs. If you access the OSC recording screen, you'll see an icon with a car - once you tap on that, it opens up an FAQ about OBDs. There, we specify in-depth about what the app supports and what models we recommend.

Hi @mirunac-telenav , I indeed saw it in the app, but after to order my dongle based on this info https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OpenStreetCam/OBD2 which should be corrected :-(

See Issue #125 here: https://github.com/kartaview/android/issues/125

I have that exact same OBD module, and prior to the V2.3.0 update in July 2018, it worked perfectly with OSC (now KartaView). I even uploaded nearly 1000 miles worth of new road images in June 2018, all with OBD data from that adapter.

Then, bluetooth was disabled in the V2.3.0 update, and it has never returned, and yet, that wiki page continues to recommend this adapter as compatible with Kartaview to this day (May 2021).

The OSC folk were kind enough to send a BLE adapter to me for free to try to see if it would restore the functionality, but alas, it and my phone were not compatible so the app could not see the BLE adapter either.

But, the result of dropping bluetooth, and therefore my adapter, has been that I've simply stopped contributing any images to Kartaview. The removal of bluetooth OBD support was demotivating and I've given up on contributing to kartaview.
