Hmm "no response from server" error is not uncommon with smack. Normally the 
successive connection attempt works. I see that you error

Did you try to wait a few minutes for other connection attempts to succeed?

In the past I have. In fact, I've woken up to find that GTalkSMS has started
on it's own while being charged overnight, and it's stuck attempting
connections. I have no idea how long it has been trying at that point,
though.

And in typing this message, I've let the app try to connect for the past
five minutes and I have seen at least 5 'Login failed' messages.

Hmm, GTalk Services seem to run fine the last days. But there are also no other 
users experiencing this.
Could you try to specify the server settings manually? And/Or maybe try an XMPP 
account from one of the free providers for GTalkSMS.
