kata-containers / kata-containers

Kata Containers is an open source project and community working to build a standard implementation of lightweight Virtual Machines (VMs) that feel and perform like containers, but provide the workload isolation and security advantages of VMs. https://katacontainers.io/

Debug console documentation inconsistent or incorrect #2075

Description of problem

Running: -

I'm trying and failing to consistently see output / diag from the kata-agent running inside the pod sandbox / guest VM.

I'm following the guidance in the Developer Guide

After much experimentation, I think need to "Enable agent debugging" as per the following: -

  1. Confirm the name of the Kata Runtime configuration file: -
export kata_configuration_file=$(kata-runtime env | grep config | awk '{print $3}' | sed 's/\"//g')
  1. Edit the configuration file

vi $kata_configuration_file

and remove the comment from enable_debug = true e.g.: -

[agent.kata]
# If enabled, make the agent display debug-level messages.
# (default: disabled)
enable_debug = true

and remove the comment from debug_console_enabled = true e.g.

# Enable debug console.

# If enabled, user can connect guest OS running inside hypervisor
# through "kata-runtime exec <sandbox-id>" command

debug_console_enabled = true
  1. Create a YAML to define a Nginx pod using Kata
cat << EOF | tee nginx-kata.yaml
apiVersion: v1
kind: Pod
metadata:
  name: nginx-kata
spec:
  runtimeClassName: kata
  containers:
  - name: nginx
    image: nginx
EOF
  1. Create pod

kubectl apply -f nginx-kata.yaml

  1. Grab the sandbox ID and console socket
export sandbox_id=$(ps -ef | grep qemu | egrep -o "sandbox-[^,][^,]*" | sed 's/sandbox-//g' | awk '{print $1}')

export console="/var/run/vc/vm/${sandbox_id}/console.sock"
  1. Access the console socket
socat "stdin,raw,echo=0,escape=0x11" "unix-connect:${console}"

This does appear to work, returning debug such as: -

{"msg":"receive createcontainer, spec: Spec { version: \"1.0.2-dev\", process: Some(Process { terminal: false, console_size: None, user: User { uid: 0, gid: 0, additional_gids: [], username: \"\" }, args: [\"/docker-entrypoint.sh\", \"nginx\", \"-g\", \"daemon off;\"], env: [\"PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin\", \"HOSTNAME=nginx-kata\", \"NGINX_VERSION=1.21.0\", \"NJS_VERSION=0.5.3\", \"PKG_RELEASE=1~buster\", \"KUBERNETES_SERVICE_HOST=10.96.0.1\", \"KUBERNETES_SERVICE_PORT=443\", \"KUBERNETES_SERVICE_PORT_HTTPS=443\", \"KUBERNETES_PORT=tcp://10.96.0.1:443\", \"KUBERNETES_PORT_443_TCP=tcp://10.96.0.1:443\", \"KUBERNETES_PORT_443_TCP_PROTO=tcp\", \"KUBERNETES_PORT_443_TCP_PORT=443\", \"KUBERNETES_PORT_443_TCP_ADDR=10.96.0.1\"], cwd: \"/\", capabilities: Some(LinuxCapabilities { bounding: [\"CAP_CHOWN\", \"CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE\", \"CAP_FSETID\", \"CAP_FOWNER\", \"CAP_MKNOD\", \"CAP_NET_RAW\", \"CAP_SETGID\", \"CAP_SETUID\", \"CAP_SETFCAP\", \"CAP_SETPCAP\", \"CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE\", \"CAP_SYS_CHROOT\", \"CAP_KILL\", \"CAP_AUDIT_WRITE\"], effective: [\"CAP_CHOWN\", \"CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE\", \"CAP_FSETID\", \

However, this is inconsistent, in that I don't always see output from the socat command.

Reading this Connect to the virtual machine using the debug console the directions in the Enabling debug console for QEMU section advises one to: -

sudo sed -i -e 's/^kernel_params = "\(.*\)"/kernel_params = "\1 agent.debug_console"/g' "${kata_configuration_file}"

which appears to duplicate the debug_console_enabled = true setting ?

I did note a few typos in that page, including: -

For QEMU, connect to the vsock as shown:

$ sudo su -c 'cd /var/run/vc/vm/{sandbox_id} && socat "stdin,raw,echo=0,escape=0x11" "unix-connect:console.sock"

which should read: -

For QEMU, connect to the vsock as shown:

$ sudo su -c 'cd /var/run/vc/vm/${sandbox_id} && socat "stdin,raw,echo=0,escape=0x11" "unix-connect:console.sock"'

i.e. the variable is missing the preceding $ symbol and there's no trailing ' at the end of the command.

I'll create a PR to (hopefully) resolve that ( the missing $ symbol is an issue in 3-4 places ).

Final comment, regarding Start kata-monitor - ONLY NEEDED FOR 2.0.x am I right in believing that kata-monitor is NOT required for Kata 2.0 and beyond e.g. 2.1.1 etc. ?

Expected result

A clear and consistent set of instructions to enable agent / pod sandbox / guest debugging, perhaps with examples.

Actual result

As per the above, inconsistent results from socat when debugging the agent / pod sandbox.

davidhay1969 commented 3 years ago

As above, have raised PR 2077 to cover the typo issues in the Developer Guide

davidhay1969 commented 3 years ago

@GabyCT not sure that this should be closed, my PR was merely to fix a small number of typos. The main issue that I raised is still, in my view, outstanding i.e. the debugging console behaves inconsistently. Should we reopen this ?

fidencio commented 3 years ago

@davidhay1969, it was automatically closed because the PR was merged. Let me re-open this one.
