@awprice thanks for raising this, have you tried to reproduce it using QEMU 5.1? either way I'll bump QEMU to 5.1
@devimc I haven't had a chance to test it with 5.1 yet - I need to work out how to build QEMU first!
I'll post back here once I've tested it.
This issue is being automatically closed as Kata Containers 1.x has now reached EOL (End of Life). This means it is no longer being maintained.
Important:
All users should switch to the latest Kata Containers 2.x release to ensure they are using a maintained release that contains the latest security fixes, performance improvements and new features.
This decision was discussed by the @kata-containers/architecture-committee and has been announced via the Kata Containers mailing list:
If you believe this issue still applies to Kata Containers 2.x, please open an issue against the Kata Containers 2.x repository, pointing to this one, providing details to allow us to migrate it.
Description of problem
When running the following pod spec under Kata 1.12.0-alpha1, we experience 9pfs "hanging" when trying to read files that are on the kataShared (9pfs) file system, i.e.
/etc/resolv.conf
.I think this is an issue on QEMU 5.0, likely resolved in 5.1.
Steps to reproduce
Run the following pod spec:
Once the pod is running, exec into the "sleep" pod and open a file that is on the kataShared filesystem:
Expected result
I expect the above commands to work without hanging.
Actual result
The commands hang when opening files that are on the kataShared filesystem.
We see the following messages in the
qemu.log
:Further information
I managed to locate the following bug report for QEMU: https://bugs.launchpad.net/qemu/+bug/1877688
And it seems to contain a similar situation to mine:
It suggests in that issue that upgrading to QEMU 5.1 will resolve the issue:
Either removing the "postgres" container from the pod or updating it's image to something different, i.e.
postgres:9.6
, the issue does not occur. This postgres image has a
VOLUME
defined in it's Dockerfile - https://github.com/docker-library/postgres/blob/fdf884a12fe3de9b87403663e5e85548ab445bf5/9.6/alpine/Dockerfile#L143 and this is provisioned on 9pfs.I'm not entirely sure what is happening in the
postgres:9.6-alpine
image to cause it to get into this state 😢Show kata-collect-data.sh details
