dm_mod kernel module doesn't load in Kata containers #3133

Closed shreyasbapat closed 3 years ago

shreyasbapat commented 3 years ago

Description of problem

Running cryptsetup on kata containers does not work because it needs dm_mod kernel module to run.

Expected result

Any volume should be encrypted.

Actual result

I was unsuccessful in doing that.

root@pod-with-raw-block-volume:/# cryptsetup luksFormat --type luks1 /dev/xvda

WARNING!
========
This will overwrite data on /dev/xvda irrevocably.

Are you sure? (Type uppercase yes): YES
Enter passphrase for /dev/xvda:
Verify passphrase:
Cannot initialize device-mapper. Is dm_mod kernel module loaded?
Cannot initialize device-mapper. Is dm_mod kernel module loaded?
root@pod-with-raw-block-volume:/# modprobe dm
modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:586 kmod_search_moddep() could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/5.4.60/modules.dep.bin'
modprobe: FATAL: Module dm not found in directory /lib/modules/5.4.60

I further followed : https://github.com/kata-containers/documentation/blob/master/how-to/how-to-load-kernel-modules-with-kata.md

But the problem persists as dm_mod is built into the kernel (This is what I got). So it is not visible in lsmod.

Infact, all the builtin kernel modules are missing:

[root@pod-with-km /]# cat /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/modules.builtin | grep dm
cat: /lib/modules/5.4.60/modules.builtin: No such file or directory
shreyasbapat commented 3 years ago

Is there a way to add the builtin kernel modules in the guest kernel?

Hi @devimc , would compiling QAT drivers also bring dm_mod? I saw that it has dm_crypt.

devimc commented 3 years ago

@shreyasbapat I don't think so, but you can follow this guide to see how to build kernel modules and load them in the container

This issue is being automatically closed as Kata Containers 1.x has now reached EOL (End of Life). This means it is no longer being maintained.

Important:

All users should switch to the latest Kata Containers 2.x release to ensure they are using a maintained release that contains the latest security fixes, performance improvements and new features.

This decision was discussed by the @kata-containers/architecture-committee and has been announced via the Kata Containers mailing list:

If you believe this issue still applies to Kata Containers 2.x, please open an issue against the Kata Containers 2.x repository, pointing to this one, providing details to allow us to migrate it.
