Calculators won't launch on iPhone 3.0 firmware #56

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install iPhone 3.0 firmware
2. Jailbreak with redsn0w
3. Install HPCalc
4. Launch HPCalc on iPhone

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Normally the calculator shows "hp loading" for a moment then shows the
calculator. Instead, I see "hp loading" for a moment, then the app quits
and goes back to the springboard.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
HPCalc 2.0.2, just installed via Cydia after fresh jailbreak on iPhone 3.0

Hi there,

While I created the original hpcalc app for jailbroken version 1.x iPhones, I
no longer support that version due
to license issues.

When iPhone OS version 2.x was released, I created FIN-12C, SCI-15C, SCI-11C,
and PRG-16C apps. The
original code I wrote for the jailbroken phone was abandoned and these new apps
were re-written using the
official iPhone SDK and include several optimizations and bug fixes that the
original jailbroken code never
had. In addition, the license issue was resolved and as a result, they are for
sale in the app store for US
$14.99 - $19.99. These versions of the app, however, are not open source.

The HPCalc version you are referring to was built by someone else, and is a
branch from my original jailbroken
code (which still is available here). I've not seen any of the branched code
released or published, so I don't
know what changes have been made, nor do I know what part of their code is
incompatible with iPhone OS
3.0. I do suspect that they have the same license issue I had which may
eventually catch up with them and
affect the long-term availability of their branch, but I have no specific
information on this, and I imagine they
will release a fix eventually despite this.

If you need a working version of the calculator today on iPhone OS 3.0, you can
purchase one of the App Store
versions. They have been tested on iPhone OS 3.0 and are indeed supported.
However, $19.99 is much more
of a cost than free, but it is still a bargain considering what you would pay
for one of these fine calculators on
eBay.

I hope this helps.

Purchasing a piece of software that has been opensource seems silly. If you
want a
decent RPN calculator, 3.0 comes with its own RPN scientific calculator. I, for
one,
would like to see the freeware version made compatible with 3.0 as I like the
HP
calculators. Just a note, somebody has taken and made a freeware version of the
16C
for the App Store.

By the way, I used the pwnage tool instead of redsnow and still have the same
problem.
